Identity began in 1983 when Leo Stanley opened a small unit inside Afflecks Palace in Manchester. After a few name changes, the shop officially became Identity in 1986. Over time, it grew into multiple locations across Afflecks and the Royal Exchange.
Throughout the years, Identity moved through all kinds of fashion trends — from Goth and Rockabilly to Indie and Casual — but it became best known for its role in the 1988 Acid House era, famous for baggy jeans, dungarees and eventually, flares.
1988
On the sixth day...
In 1988, during the height of Manchester’s Acid House era, Leo B Stanley, one of the founders of Identity, created On the Sixth Day God Created Manchester. What began as a simple t-shirt design quickly became a powerful statement of pride in the city.
The design was worn across clubs, dance floors and streets throughout Manchester, capturing the spirit of the era and going on to become one of the city’s most iconic and enduring slogans.
2015
Modern Printing
By 2015, Identity had embraced modern garment printing, introducing DTG printers alongside traditional screen printing methods. This shift allowed for greater flexibility, faster turnaround times and the ability to produce smaller, high-quality runs.
These technologies helped Identity support a growing number of brands and creators, while maintaining the consistency, detail and reliability the business had built its reputation on.
2021
DTF Printing
In June 2021, Identity became the first company in the UK to install a dedicated DTF printer, marking a major step forward in garment print technology. This move opened up new possibilities for durability, colour vibrancy and material versatility.
DTF quickly became a core part of Identity’s production, setting the foundations for future innovation and the eventual launch of DTF Prints Online.
2023
UV Printing
In August 2023, Identity expanded its production capabilities further with the introduction of UV printing technology. This allowed for high-quality printing onto rigid and non-traditional materials with exceptional precision and finish.
The addition of UV printing enabled Identity to offer more advanced branding solutions, from signage to bespoke products, further broadening its creative output.
2026
Industry Leading DTF
By 2026, Identity had become the UK’s leading DTF supplier, recognised for industry-leading customer service and premium print quality. All standard DTF production is ran on 9-head printers using high-grade films and inks as standard.
Identity continued to lead the market by being the only UK supplier to offer DTF cutting, the first to introduce DTF UV embroidery, SoftStretch DTF and affordable Blockout DTF, alongside the launch of Metallic Gold UV DTF.
